Obituary of Vernon Alfred Ottaway

The death of Vernon Alfred Ottaway, age 95, husband of the late Laura (Stewart) Ottaway, occurred at Ridgewood Veterans Wing, Saint John, NB on Sunday, April 24, 2016 with his son Mark at his side. He was born in Saint John on December 28, 1920 to the late Daisy (Breadman) and Alfred Ottaway. Vernon served overseas during WWII with the Royal Canadian Navy and was a member of the Canadian Legion, Branch #69. He was also a member of the Naval Association. He loved boating on the Saint John River for many summers with his family and friends, being a member of the Marble Cove Power Boat Club.He was the owner of Harold Peer Plumbing and Heating Ltd, not retiring until well into his 70’s. In later years he enjoyed a good game of cribbage, going for drives and sitting in the sun watching his flowers grow. Besides his parents, Vernon was predeceased by his wife Laura, son Norman, step father Calvin Cogswell as well as many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Vernon is survived by his daughter, Beverley (Jim) Nicholson; sons, Edward and Mark (Edra) Ottaway; grandchildren, Geordie (Lisa) and Sarah Nicholson; Joshua (Hannah), Lindsay, Adam and Ryan Ottaway; and Michelle Beaton; great-grandchildren, Darnell, Jayda, Jackson, Jamie, Daniel Vernon and Cole; his sister, Edith (Cogswell) Orasuk; brother-in-law, Daniel (Shirley) Stewart; and special friend, Mary Eileen Johnson, as well as many nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his care-giver, Karen Ring and long time friends, Bruce and Mary Harrigan and the Little family. The family would like to thank the staff of Ridgewood Veterans Wing for the excellent care of our father over the past year. Vernon will be resting at Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Rd., Saint John, NB (634-7425). Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A Legion Tribute service will take place on Wednesday at 7:00 PM. The celebration of Vernon’s life will be held at the Church of the Resurrection, 20 MacDonald Avenue, Grand Bay-Westfield, NB on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at 2:00 PM. Interment will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances in memory of Vernon may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Ridgewood Veterans Wing or a charity of the donor’s choice.
