Obituary of Madeline Eleanor Frauley
We are sad to announce the passing of Madeline Eleanor Frauley, daughter of the late Katie (MacIsaac) Frauley and J. Harry Frauley on August 11th, 2024, at Trinity Court, Rocmaura Nursing Home. Maddy (as she was known at Rocmaura) was born in Saint John on the 14th day of August 1934 (to a family of 8 siblings) and was just 3 days from reaching her 90th birthday.
In her younger days Madeline was well known in Saint John for singing at many, many weddings, funerals and anniversaries, beginning when she was just 14 years of age (with the encouragement of the late Sr. Helen O’Neil). She also participated in the K. of. C. Operettas. She loved Irish music and opera and would sing (upon request, or not) wherever she happened to be.
Madeline also travelled extensively crossing Canada in a VW Bug with a friend of hers back in the 50’s and eventually landed in Las Vegas to visit an aunt. Bermuda, the Caribbean, Ireland, England, Germany, Switzerland and Scotland were other destinations, and her last “BIG” trip was to Australia and New Zealand. She was one of the original “Cruisers” going with another friend on a Kent liner out of Saint John to Europe when she was just in her early 20’s. Her suitcase was always packed (it would seem) and she was ready to ‘hit the road’. I always firmly believed that her one intent in working was to get enough cash for another trip.
She celebrated St. Patrick’s Day each year by serving her friends and relatives Irish Coffee and lots of Irish music. On Friday evenings she celebrated by serving her friends a barbecue and refreshments. On Canada Day she and her neighbour, the late Gerry Chiasson (a veteran) celebrated by raising the flag with other friends and neighbours, and of course with refreshments to follow. Madeline enjoyed golf and travelling the various courses in the province and was also a great swimmer.
Madeline was a practicing Catholic at the Cathedral and St. Pius X Parish in times past and was a lector at both parishes. She worked for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint John in the Finance Department for a number of years and all priests and seminarians who had occasion to visit were warmly welcomed.
She is survived by her sisters Kate of Vancouver, and Theresa of Saint John; and brothers Ron (Barb) and John, both of Ottawa, and brother Joe of Saint John. Also surviving is sister-in-law Ebby (Tolan) Frauley of Saint John. There are many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and even a great, great niece together with plenty of cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Merlin, her sister Mary (Frauley) O’Brien, her brother Doug and his wife Helen (Hunter) Frauley.
Madeline’s funeral will be under the compassionate care of Brenan’s Funeral Home and will be on Thursday, August 15th, 2024, with Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at St. Pius X Church/Holy Redeemer Parish. Visitation will be held at church beginning at 10:00 AM prior to the Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Madeline may be made to Rocmaura Nursing Home or to a charity of your choosing.
Maddy was always treated like a family member at Rocmaura, and when we went to visit, we were treated in the same manner. It was a wonderful, caring home for her last days and we can’t say enough good things about all the staff. Thank You!!!
