Obituary of Adelaide Maude McCavour

After her 109th Christmas, Addie quietly passed away on December 25th, 2016 in Saint John, at the Church of St. John and St. Stephen Home having just celebrated her 108th birthday. She was born on December 12th, 1908 to James Edward and Alberta May (Brown) Mawhinney in Beaver Harbour, New Brunswick. Before her marriage she worked at Lawson Dairies and (Dunn) & Bradstreet as a clerk. The war took Addie and her devoted husband, Leonard (deceased 1992) to Saskatchewan. Returning from western Canada, after the war, they lived most of their life in Lorneville. After Len’s passing Addie continued to live in her own home until 2007, with the help of relatives and caring neighbours. As a long time member of the Lorneville Brethren Assembly she found great spiritual comfort and friendship. Taught by her mother, Addie started quilting as a young child and enjoyed this hobby for over nine decades, giving away nearly all of her hand-crafted works of art. She read the newspaper daily, keeping up with and discussing current events and kept diaries, covering every day of her adult life. Until her 98th year she continued to go out weekly for groceries which always had to include a stop at "Timmie’s". Although she could be strong-willed she had a good sense of humour and maintained a close kinship with her relatives. Addie will be missed by her nieces Betty (Harry) MacDonald and Marilyn; her nephews Gordon (Muriel) Mawhinney and Hal (Sharon) Mawhinney. She is also survived by several grandnieces and nephews, special cousins, Ralph McDonough and his sister Pauline as well as many close friends. Besides her parents and husband she was predeceased by brothers Arthur and Lamont, sister Helen, nephews Ervine and Lloyd and niece Grace. A private visitation with family and close friends, followed by the service, took place at Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home Chapel, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John (506) 634-7425. Private family interment will be held in the Lorneville Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Lorneville Brethren Assembly, Saint John SPCA Animal Rescue or to a charity of the donor’s choice. As written by Addie - "Thanks to everyone who has helped me so much in every way. May the Lord bless you all."
