Obituary of Douglas Basil Smith

It is with great sadness the family of Douglas Basil Smith announce his passing which occurred on October 31, 2016 at Bobby’s Hospice, Saint John, NB. Born in River Hebert, Nova Scotia on June 27, 1947 to Basil and Caroline (Porter) Smith. Upon moving to Saint John in 1969, Doug worked for several construction companies before becoming the first Business Manager for the Operating Engineers, Local 946 in New Brunswick. He later went on to purchase Dean Construction Ltd. in 1978, which he operated until his death. For many years Doug and his family enjoyed their camp on the West Branch of Musquash. He looked forward to going fishing, especially at Sherwood Lake with his friends. In July, he fulfilled a "bucket list" fishing trip in Northern Quebec with his son in law, grandson and friends. Doug is survived by his caregiver and loving partner Linda Thorne, his daughter Heather (Rob) Gates, daughter Janet (Tony) Power, of Bedford, NS, and his son Matthew Smith; brother James Smith, of Halifax, NS; sisters Helen (Robert) Horne, of Halifax, NS, Ruth Anne (David) Tait, of Kelowna, BC, and Ethel Barr, of Edmonton, AB; grandchildren: Natasha (Mike Harriet), Briar, Ellen, Adalyn and Douglas; several nieces and nephews; the mother of his children, Susan Smith, with whom he remained close; special friend Alan "Ding" Lingley and honourary granddaughter Amanda Saia. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his nephew Jeffrey Smith and niece Meaghan Smith. Resting at Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Rd., Saint John, NB (634-7425) with visitation on Thursday, November 3, 2016 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. The funeral service will be held on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 11:00 AM from the Anglican Church of the Resurrection, 20 MacDonald Ave., Grand Bay-Westfield. For those who wish, remembrances in memory of Doug may be made to Bobby’s Hospice.
