Obituary of Francis John Riley

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Francis J. Riley announces his passing, which occurred after a period of illness on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. He was born in Sheffield, United Kingdom on November 12, 1936, a son of the late John and Ellen (Wilkinson) Riley. Francis was the beloved husband of F. Anne (Chandler) Riley and father of Peregrine Riley. He was predeceased by his parents, as well as his siblings, Thomas and Margaret. Francis graduated from the Sheffield College of Art, and earned a spot in the Slade School of Fine Art at the University of London, receiving his degree in 1960. He taught art and technical drawing in England, Australia, and New Zealand before coming to Canada where he taught at the then named Nova Scotia College of Art, before beginning a long career teaching at a number of schools in Saint John and continuing to draw, paint, and carve when he had time. He built his home entirely using non-powered hand tools. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John, NB (634-7425). The family is hosting a gathering of remembrance. Friends are invited to take part at the Lorneville Community Centre on Tuesday June 28th from 6-8 PM. For those who wish, remembrances can be made to the New Brunswick Extra Mural Program, or any charity of the donor’s choice.
