Obituary of Ann King

Elizabeth “Ann”  King  passed away peacefully on Wed Oct 30th on the palliative care unit of Saint John Regional Hospital surrounded by her family. Ann was born on April 30 , 1933 to John (Doc) and Jean (Angus) Edgecombe of Saint John. Childhood antics from 12 Duncraggon Court were captured on movie reels and sent overseas to her father during WW2 from 1939-1945. Ann claims she met her lifelong friend Anne with an “e” at age three at a tea party! (Who knew there were to be so many Ann’s in Ann’s future life!) She attended Winter Street Elementary School where lifelong friendships developed with DeeDee, Ella, Joan and Olga. This was the core group of the fearsome canoers that later tackled various rivers in NB every July long weekend leaving many children at home.  She graduated from Saint John High in 1949 prior to entering the Montreal General Hospital  School of Nursing.– class of 1954. Ann met her husband Barry in Montreal and moved to Millville NB before settling in Rothesay in 1957.

Despite valiantly battling Multiple Sclerosis for 41 years, Ann radiated what was good in the world deeply loving her family and friends and engaging in her community and church. Ann was deputy Mayor of Rothesay from 1983-1995 serving on the Fire and Library Boards. She volunteered for the Red Cross and Cancer Societies of Saint John.  With her friend Theresa, they were founders of the Rothesay C.A.M.R and The Chalet which later became the Canadian Association For Community Living (C.A.C.L). They served for years on the provincial C.A.C.L. (Now referred to as “Inclusion Canada”.) She was honoured with a Life Member of the Provincal C.A.C.L and the NB Cancer Society. She even braved teaching girl guides and working alongside her husband part time as a receptionist at Rothesay Medical clinic.  She was a member of the Rothesay Living Museum and St Paul’s Anglican Church Women (ACW).

It was “the community” that enabled Ann to live out her life in her own home.  For the past 20 years, we are eternally grateful for all the wonderful In-Home Caregivers and volunteers who embraced our family and a special heartfelt thanks goes to: Lisa, Lynn, Donna, Debbie M, Angelica Jamie, Craig, Tes, Lorna, Debbie L,  Maria, Marishaila, Cheryll, Amme, Hazel, Rose,  Marie, Pat, Glennis, Ann, Charles, Linden, Jennifer, and so many more. The Extra- Mural Program and health professionals we engaged with along Ann’s Journey provided exemplary care (even visiting us on special occasions like Christmas and Thanksgiving!!!).  As a neighbour said: “Ann had the biggest social life on the street” with tea served daily and all occasions were celebrated around her welcoming dining room table. A special thanks to Dr. C. Mackin and the Palliative Care Team for the comfort and care in Ann’s final days.

Ann is survived by her loving husband Dr. J Barry King of 69 years and her children Carol King, Jamie King, Angus King (Reta Dunlop) and Jean (Stephen)  Hickman and a dear friend of the family Patricia Hutchison. Nan adored her grandchildren Alexander Hickman and Sarah (Ben) Graham. She had a close knit relationship with her ever supportive brother John (Marilyn) Edgecombe and her sister Jill Fanjoy. She was predeceased by her youngest daughter Eleanor Ann in 1964 and brother in law Paul Fanjoy in 2020. Ann’s sense of family radiated to many cousins, nieces and nephews.
