Obituary of Susan Mary Petrie
Susan Mary Petrie was born in Saint John on May 22,1937, to Florence and Edward A. Petrie. She grew up in Rothesay, and spoke often of canoe trips on the Kennebecasis River and Belleisle Bay, and of sailing trips to Deer Island and Campobello on the Rena M. She married and raised a family in Woodstock before returning to Rothesay in 1982.
An avid bird-watcher, rug-hooker, quilter and chorister, in mid-life she returned to university, receiving a B.A. in English and later an M.Ed. in Adult Education. She also resumed her nursing career--devoting many hours to patients in both the palliative care and psychiatric units at the Regional Hospital, and helping others at Ridgewood Addiction Services.
Susan loved reading biographies and mysteries, baking, kayaking, and walking the beach. She will be especially remembered by family and friends for her warm hospitality at Rose Cottage, New River Beach where she loved sighting warblers, picking berries, and tuning her life to the tides.
Susan died peacefully at the age of 87 in palliative care at the Regional Hospital. She is survived by her brother Edward (Patricia), half-sister Elizabeth, son Peter, and daughter
Heidi.
"Alive, she had been everywhere. ... Dead she will be the same. Wheeling with the planets"
(Howard Jacobson).
Arrangements are under the care of Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424). A memorial service for Susan will be held at a later date.
