Obituary of Larry Joseph Shaw

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Larry Joseph Shaw, Lepreau, NB, announce his peaceful passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital on August 28, 2024.   Larry was born July 9, 1945, the son of the late Alma and Harold Shaw of St. George, NB.

Larry is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 59 years, Martha (Gilmore) Shaw; sons Troy Shaw (Wendy), Lepreau, NB; Trevor Shaw (Janet), Warner Robins, Georgia, USA; daughter Tasha Ralph (Dale), Lepreau.  Larry’s pride and joy, his grandchildren, Jena Wilson (Will); Devan Shaw (Jaime); Lora Burley (Evan); Jolene Galliah (Blake); Chad Ralph, all of Lepreau and Savanna Shaw, Oromocto, NB. His precious singing and dancing partners, his four great-grandchildren.  Also, his Sister Eldene Powell, St. George, NB; brother Earl Shaw (Joan), St. George, NB; sister-in-law Crystal Shaw, Utopia, NB and brothers-in-law Wilson Gilmore (Carol), Crawford Lake, NB; Roy Gilmore, Lepreau; Bill Gilmore (Brenda) Moncton, NB; Barry Gilmore (Andrea), Lepreau, and many nieces, nephews and cousins, especially, his niece Judy and Emile Boudreau.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by twin infants, daughter Martha and son Larry; sister and brother-in-law Alice and Ellsworth Wilcox; brothers and sisters-in-law Floyd and June Shaw, Cedric and June Shaw, Jack and Christine Shaw, and brother Dale Shaw and sister-in-law Linda Gilmore; his mother-in-law and father-in-law Margaret and Charles Gilmore.

Dad began his career as a Power Engineer and worked at NB Power (Courtenay Bay); Kimberly Clarke, Saint John; Federal Department of Transportation, Goose Bay, Labrador; and Halifax, NS.  Dad retired from NB Power (Point Lepreau), where he worked for 21 years as a Senior Technical Specialist.

Dad always volunteered in any community he lived in. He volunteered with Scouts in both Goose Bay and Lepreau, the community hall in Nine Mile River, NS and the churches in those communities. He was a proud St. Margaret’s Church member, having been a church and parish warden for several years. He was past president of the Lepreau Cemetery Committee and Chairman of the Lepreau LSD and other various organizations over the years. 

Dad had the opportunity to travel for work and pleasure through Asia, Europe and North and South America. Dad enjoyed cruising the most with Mom, the love of his life. Despite the fantastic places he visited, upon returning to Lepreau, he always said, “Now this is the best place of all!”

Dad spent his retirement years doing various carpentry jobs, ATVing and hunting. 

Most of all, he enjoyed being with his family and creating great memories for them.  The family, especially the grandkids, will always treasure the years spent at the cottage at Birney’s Lake. He was always there to help his kids with house renovations and take his grandkids to their various activities.  There was never a doubt about how much we were loved.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Corless and Dr. Mokhtari for their excellent and compassionate care.  A special thank you to Mirinda Hooper, his caregiver, over the last few months.

Resting at Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave. Saint John, N.B. (506 634 1701). A visitation will take place on Friday, August 30, 2024, at Castle Funeral Home from 3:00pm to 8:00 pm. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at St. Margaret’s Anglican Church in Lepreau at 11:00am. Interment will be held in Lepreau Cemetery. Donations to the Lepreau Cemetery Fund or St. Margaret’s Anglican Church Fund or the donors choice would be appreciated by the family.
