Obituary of Douglas Arthur Shephard
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Douglas Arthur Shephard on July 31, 2024, in Saint John, NB at age 86.
He was born in West Saint John to the late Edgar & Dorothy (Smith) Shephard. He was the beloved husband of 64 years to Barbara Shephard (Stone). He was a devoted father to Cheryl (Steve) Mullin, Mark (Bridget) Shephard, Michele (Joe) Nagle, Krista Ibrahim, Alison (Chris) Brown, and Christian (Dawn) Shephard. He also leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth as a grandfather of 17 and great-grandfather of 4.
Doug began his insurance career in 1957 at the Western Assurance Co. He continued as a well-respected insurance broker who was known for his professionalism, integrity and dedication to his clients. He was also a mentor to many in the industry, generously sharing his knowledge and experience.
Doug had a particular love of gardening. His gardens were a reflection of his nurturing spirit and dedication, always flourishing with vegetables, vibrant flowers and greenery. He loved all music but especially Frank Sinatra. He loved to cook Sunday meals, bringing family and friends together with his delicious creations. His absolute love for Christmas was evident in his stunning Christmas tree which he meticulously decorated each year, filling their home with festive cheer and warmth.
Doug also took great pride in lovingly restoring their Victorian home on Leinster Street, a project that showcased his dedication, creativity, and attention to detail. This home stands as a testament to his hard work and love of history and beauty.
As a proud "Friend of Bill W.," Doug dedicated his life to recovery and supporting others in their journey.
He is survived by his sister, Marilyn (Syl) Nordstrom, sisters-in-law Roseanne Shephard, Sharon (Harry) Breen, Ada Compton, Betty MacLeod; brothers-in-law Malcolm Hewey, Gene (Denise) Stone, Dennis Stone, Aunt Irene Barrett and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Besides his parents, Doug is predeceased by his brothers, William (Bill) and Eddie Shephard; sisters Eleanor Hewey, Jean (Mike) Colwell and Darlene (Larry) Losier; brothers-in-law Doug Woodford, Henry Compton & Wendell MacLeod; son-in-law Randy Palmer and infant great granddaughter Quinn Trecartin.
Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506) 634-7424, where visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 from 3 to 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Stella Maris Church, 201 Bayside Drive, Saint John on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at 11 am. Interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to Sophia Recovery Centre or St. Vincent de Paul would be appreciated.
