Obituary of J. Ian M. Whitcomb

Whitcomb, J. Ian M., 82, of Saint John, NB died February 5, 2015 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John on April 4, 1932; son of Charles and Frances; he is pre-deceased by his brother, Murdoch. Graduated from Saint John High School in 1949; UNB in 1953 (B.A.) and in 1962 (BCL) and University of Michigan Law School (LLM) in 1963. He worked in the investment business in Montreal as a bond trader and in Fredericton and Saint John as partner in an investment firm specializing in municipal, school and hospital financings and real estate development and as branch manager and director of Eastern Securities (1953-1960.) Ian was admitted to the New Brunswick Bar in 1964 and was appointed Queen’s Council in 1984. He practiced law in Saint John commencing in 1964 specializing in tax, estate planning and related corporate areas with Stewart McKelvey and Cox & Palmer and predecessor firms. Ian married Miriam ("Mimi") in Montreal in 1956. He is survived by four children: Katherine (Toronto); Ian W. (Elizabeth, Kingston, NB); Colin (Susan, Halifax) and Susan (Keith, Gander) – all graduates of Saint John High School and university graduates. There are ten grand-children; Martha; Katie, Robert, Anna, Jamieson, Ian, Duncan, Sophie, Alexandra & Katherine as well as one great-grand child: Evan; son of Katie. Mimi passed away in 2000. Ian was a Member of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada and Montreal Bond Traders Association; a Research Officer with the Royal Commission on Taxation (Ottawa, 1964); Governor of the Canadian Tax Foundation (Toronto); Member of Council, Law Society of New Brunswick; Chairman, New Brunswick Law Foundation; Governor and Chairman of Audit Committee, New Brunswick Institute of Chartered Accountants. In addition to serving as a Lecturer in Trusts at UNB Law School, Ian was a speaker in programs of the Canadian Tax Foundation, Canadian Bar Association and Institute of Chartered Accountants. At the time of his death, Ian was a member of the St John & St Stephen (now "Grace") Presbyterian Church; the Canadian Bar Association and Law Society of New Brunswick; Riverside Golf & Country Club and Union Club; the Lancaster Golden Service Club and the Cedar Hill-Greenwood Cemetery Company. Visitation at Brenan’s Funeral Home (634-7424), 111 Paradise Row, on Monday, February 9 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm.
