Obituary of Harold James Frederick Steele

Captain Harold James Frederick Steele (Ret’d.) of Quispamsis, husband of Wendy J. (King) Steele, passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at the Saint John Regional Hospital following a two year battle with cancer. Born in Saint John on April 28, 1954, he was a son of the late Harold "Pete" and Arvilla "Babe" (Godwin) Steele. Harold was employed as a grain broker with Parrish and Heimbecker Limited (formerly Smith Brokerage Limited). A member of the 527 Wing, Simonds Air Cadet Squadron in his youth, he went on to serve the Squadron as a civilian instructor, before becoming an officer, and eventually Commanding Officer, with the 1691 Saint John Army Cadet Corps. A licensed pilot and a Beaver and Cub Leader when his children were young, he was also a founding member of DeLancey’s Brigade and a widely respected historical re-enactor. An active member of the Kennebecasis Baptist Church, Harold served in many capacities throughout the years, as Deacon, Trustee, Youth Leader, Sunday School Teacher, and on various church committees. His main focus in life, however, was his family, for which he always made time; particularly his precious grandchildren. In addition to Wendy, his wife of 30 years, Harold is survived by two sons, Alex Steele of Quispamsis and Rob Steele (Amy) of Rothesay; grandchildren Natalie and Blake; siblings Donna Steele of Long Point, Carolyn Hatfield (Erroll) of Rothesay, Lynn Ginn (Lloyd) of Saint John, and Gary Steele (Julie) of Halifax; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many great and loyal (and rebel) friends. Resting at the Kennebecasis Baptist Church, 383 Hampton Road, Quispamsis, with visiting on Thursday, August 15, 2013, from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 3:00 PM at the church. Interment will take place privately in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Kennebecasis Baptist Church Mortgage Fund or any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). Online condolences and remembrances may be placed at www.BrenansFH.com.
