Obituary of W. George Lewis

William "George" Lewis of Saint John, husband of the late A. Elizabeth "Betty" (McKinney) Lewis, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 29, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born at Coles Island on December 29, 1926, he was a son of the late Ottie and Florence Lewis. George was employed with Johnson Construction for 18 years, and then worked at Saint John Shipbuilding as a crane slinger until his retirement in 1991. In his spare time, George enjoyed feeding and watching birds, reading, and puttering around his garage and workshop. He also enjoyed the company of his dogs, caring for them while he was able. George is survived by his children, Gordon Lewis (Nina) of Toronto, Freeman Lewis (Roberta) of Saint John, Joanne Gautreau (Edward) of French Village, Clara Burke of Saint John, Nina Mason (John) of Saint John, Diane Lowe (Frankie) of Saint John, Elsie Lewis (Jerry Castonguay) of Sudbury, and Nancy Leach (James) of Saint John; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Lewis of Saint John; 23 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 9 great great grandchildren; sisters Lela Sabean of Hamilton, ON, Violet Lewis of Midland, and Eva Quigley of the Kingston Peninsula; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, George was predeceased by a son, George; a son-in-law, Bobby Burke; grandchildren Lenny and Sherry; brothers Freeman, Gordon, and Clarence; and sisters Muriel and Ruthie. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Sunday from 7-9 PM and Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 2:00 PM from Brenan’s Chapel. Interment will take place in Ocean View Memorial Gardens.
