Obituary of A. Elizabeth Hoyt Brown Prescott

Prescott, A. Elizabeth Hoyt Brown – A. Elizabeth Prescott of Kennebecasis Drive, Saint John passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Tuesday, December 8, 2009. She was born on May 30, 1925 at Saint John to the late James and E. Georgiana (Seeds) Hoyt. Elizabeth graduated from Saint John High School and then attended McGill University obtaining her B.A. degree in Mathematics and Economics in 1946. She subsequently attended the University of New Brunswick obtaining her B.C.L. (Civic Law) degree in 1950. She was appointed to the Queen’s Counsel in 1982 and was given a life membership to the Law Society of New Brunswick in 2000. Elizabeth practiced with Sanford and Teed, then Gordon Willet until joining then the law office of McKelvie, MacAulay, Machum and Fairweather from where she practiced for many years and subsequently became a partner. She was a member of the YMCA (Dancing and Gym), Westfield Golf and Country Club (Ladies Golf Secretary), Union Club (Ladies President), United Empire Loyalists Association (President) and Gamma Phi Beta Society (McGill). She is survived by one sister, Eleanor Carson (Alexander) of Calgary, AB; niece, Margaret Fox (Dale); nephew, James Carson (Teri), great niece, Lannie Fox and great nephews, Brait and Nathan Carson. Besides her parents, Elizabeth was predeceased by her first husband Horace S. Brown in 1985 and second husband Basil A. Prescott in 2006. In keeping with Elizabeth’s wishes, a private family funeral service will be held from Trinity Anglican Church, Charlotte Street, Saint John, at a later date. Interment will take place in the family plot at Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated by the family.
