Obituary of Det. Sgt. Wilfred Douglas Stewart

Surrounded by his loving family the passing of Wilfred Stewart, a long time resident of Welsford, NB, husband of Doris May Stewart (Murphy)(Wheaton) occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Sunday, September 13, 2009. He was born on August 12, 1922 to the late Wilfred and Emmaline (La Goff) Stewart. Wilfred served his country overseas in World War II. He was in the Royal Canadian Army Signal Corps Division. After the war, Wilfred briefly worked with the Saint John Fire Department until he joined the Saint John Police Force in August of 1953. He then retired from active duty in August of 1977. Wilfred was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #69, a former member of the Masonic Lodge and attended Fundamental Baptist Church. Besides his wife Doris, he is survived by his two sons: John (Christina) of Rothesay and Robin of Saint John; two daughters: Laverne Welch (Robert) of Seminole, FL and Donna Blanchard of Saint John, NB; two stepdaughters: Karen Steele (Bruce) of Moncton and Janet Corbett (Robert) of Gagetown; 11 grandchildren: Robert Corbett (Jennifer), Sarah Scouten (Patrick), Ross Corbett (Stephanie), Julie Urquhart (Sonny), Joseph (Sarah) and Jana Blanchard and Robin (Stephanie), Jamie and Katie Stewart and Sheri and Chelsea Stewart; five step grandchildren: Jennifer Taylor (Andrew), Patti Steele (Troy), Alyson Steele (Bradley), Jeffery and Jordan Arseneault; nine great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren and life long friend, Charlie Fillmore. Besides his parents, Wilfred was predeceased by his loving first wife, Dorothea (Muir) Stewart and a son Douglas Leonard Stewart. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held from Brenan’s Chapel on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 1 pm. A private family interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish remembrances may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
