Obituary of Thelma Rebecca Edith Lawton

Surrounded by her family, the passing of Thelma Lawton, wife of the late Gordon F. Lawton, occurred on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She was born on June 26, 1910 at Burnt Land Brook, NB to the late Percy M. and Fannie F. (Fraser) Everett. She worked at T. Eaton Company as a seamstress and Neilson Clearing House. She also provided childcare, in her home for many years. Through the childcare she met a life long friend Tracey Seeley Yamanaka, who visited her yearly from Japan. Thelma was a member of the Tabernacle United Baptist Church and the Women’s Missionary Society. She loved her family, church, quilting, knitting and crocheting. She is survived by her two daughters: Helen Lawton and Gordena McLenaghan (Ron); two grandchildren: Roni (Troy Nesbitt) and Daryl (Jeanette Murphy); special niece (who was like a daughter), Doreen Anthony (Burdell) and their children Judy (John Losier), Barbara (Fred Dickinson) and Mark (Mary Jean) and their children: Jeffrey, Russell, Tony, Adam, Darren and Darlene; sister in-law, Doreen Lawton; two nieces: Lois Tooke and Dorothy Gallant; nephew, Donald Hunter and many other nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She loved her visits and phone calls from Gordon’s nieces and nephews, Arthur Sprague (Margaret), Phyllis Moore (Sandy) and Alliene Wilson. Besides her loving husband Gordon of 59 years and her parents, Thelma was predeceased by her sisters: Doris Hunter, Ethel Giberson, Marvena Everett and brothers: P. Raymond and Fraser Everett. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held from Brenan’s Chapel on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 11:30 am. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to Tabernacle United Baptist Church Hymnal Fund, St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation (Restorative Care Unit) or the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
