Obituary of Deno P. Pappas Q.C.

At age 75, died on Sunday, April 19, 2009 after his courageous battle with a lengthy illness. Deno was born August 25, 1933 in Saint John, to the late Peter and Nikoleta (Leta) Pappas. He attended Saint John High School and graduated with his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University. Deno was called to the New Brunswick Bar in 1958. Deno acted as the solicitor and common clerk for the City of Saint John prior to becoming one of the founding members of the law firm, Clark Drummie. He was a talented and respected lawyer; being named Queen’s Counsel in 1975 and earning a life membership (50 years) with the New Brunswick Law Society. Deno gave back to his profession through prominent leadership roles in various professional organizations. He formerly served as a member of the council of the New Brunswick Law Society, president of the Saint John Law Society, director of the Canadian Transport Lawyers Association, member of the National Council for the Administration of Justice in Canada, and as a guest lecturer at the University of New Brunswick Law School. Deno was a long time member of the Riverside Golf & Country Club and enjoyed golfing with his friends and his involvement over the years with various local organizations, including the Saint John Executive Association, the Saint John Port Authority, the Union Club, and the Parrtown Club. Deno was an exceptional man who loved his Greek heritage. His parents taught him the value of hard work and the virtue of humility through the time he spent at their family-owned restaurants, the Riviera, the Reversing Falls and the White House Lodge. Deno is survived by his wife, Patricia Anglin; his three sons from prior marriage to Elizabeth Pappas (nee Armstrong), Peter (Jody), Deno (Kimberly) and John (Maureen); three grandchildren, Michael, Julia and Alexander; and his extended family members, George Maniatis and the Petrakos family. He is further survived by other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Nicholas Pappas. Funeral service for Deno P. Pappas, Q.C. will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 23, 2009 from St. John’s (Stone) Church, 87 Carleton Street, Saint John. Father Theodore Efthimiadis will officiate. Friends and relatives are welcome at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) , on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 from 7:00-9:00 p.m., and Wednesday, April 22, 2009 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. Interment will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the charity of one’s choice is appreciated.
