Obituary of M. Douglas Mitchell

The sudden death of Doug Mitchell, of Rothesay occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Wednesday, February 11, 2009. He was born in Fredericton on October 7, 1923 to the late Morley and Grace (Harris) Mitchell. Doug served his country in World War II as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force. After the war, Doug became a teacher, serving in both public and private schools in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia for 39 years, retiring under the Saint John School Board. He was an active member of the First Wesleyan Church (dedicating his time teaching Sunday School and to various other church activities) and Gideon’s International. In his spare time, Doug was an avid bowler. Doug was known, for his love for the Lord and his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Robina (McLeod); one son, David (Joyce) of Saint John; four daughters: Heather Hockley (James) of New Minas, NS; Deborah Mitchell of Saint John, Jane Wheaton (Mark) of Bloomfield, NB and Jennifer Marples (Richard) of Papua New Guinea; one brother, Gordon Mitchell; five sisters: Grace White, Esther Mitchell, Miriam Mitchell, Julia Estey and Carol Heighton; 11 grandchildren; two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Doug was predeceased by one brother, Paul Mitchell. Resting at Brenans Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB with visiting on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held from the First Wesleyan Church, Boars Head Road, Saint John on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 1:30 PM. Interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery in the spring. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the First Wesleyan Church or Gideon’s International or the charity of the donor’s choice.
