Obituary of Dorothy Brooks

BROOKS, DOROTHY MARIE- It is with deep regret that the family of Dorothy (Dot) Brooks announces her death at the age of 89 after a period of failing health. At the time of her death, she was a resident at Ridgewood Veteran’s Wing but for thirty years, she was a resident at Carleton Kirk Seniors Complex where she made numerous friends. Born in Sussex, NB on January 10, 1920, Dorothy was the youngest of six children born to the late Robert and Gertrude Brooks (nee Leclair) of Sussex, NB, which is where Dorothy was raised. Dororthy was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her sisters, Gertrude Pollard and Peg Cummings and by her brothers, Frank, Donald and Bernie Brooks. Dorothy is also survived by her nephews, Bob Brooks of Dartmouth, NS, Bob Cummings of Saint John, Michael Brooks of Fredericton, NB, Paul Brooks of Hampton, NB, and Joe Brooks of Grand Bay- Westfield. Also survived by her nieces, Dawn Short of Sussex, NB, Betty McHugh of Saint John, Jacqueline Thomson of London, Ontario, Geraldine Carter of Geary, NB, Sylvia Mitchell and Diane Arsenault of Hampton, NB, Susan Brooks of Saint John and Lynne Stevens and Margaret Godin of Quispamsis, NB. Dorothy was employed for all of her working years with NB Tel, and held a number of progressively responsible management positions in Sussex, Moncton and later in Saint John from where she retired in 1977 as Chief Operator for NB Tel. Dorothy was most proud of her service in the Canadian Army during WWII, enlisting May of 1942 and seeing active service in Saint John and later, serving overseas in London, England as a member of the Women’s Army Corps. Dorothy led a very active and interesting life and always took an active interest in the lives of all her brothers and sisters as well as her nieces and nephews. Dorothy loved to travel and over the years, she and her friends toured throughout Canada and the US as well as Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. During her life, Dorothy made numerous friends and she will be dearly missed by her surviving family and by those whose lives she touched. Resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, 634-7424. Visiting on Wednesday from 7-9 pm and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption on Friday at 12:00 Noon. Interment will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Wards Creek in the Spring. Following the service a reception will be held at the Assumption Centre. A tribute to a veteran’s service will be held on Thursday at 7:00 pm. Remembrances may be made to the VON or the charity of the donor’s choice.
