Obituary of Ian Grant LEWIS

LEWIS, Ian Grant (1953 – 2006) passed away unexpectedly at his home in Ottawa. Ian, also known as Cronan (his Orthodox name), was born in Rexton, the only son of the late Grant and Betty Lewis. Calling New Brunswick home, Ian spent time in Nova Scotia, PEI and Ontario, sometimes wintering at a monastery in Texas. In his early teen years, Ian took up fly-tying and bag-piping. One of his flies was highly sought after by sports planning trips to the Miramichi. He was a member of the Saint John Heather Society and the Royal Canadian Legion Pipe Bands and was a popular solo piper at fairs and social occasions. Ian felt a calling to follow Jesus at a young age. He heeded that call as an altar boy at St. James the Less Church in Renforth. He went on to receive a BA from St. Thomas University and then a Master of Theological Studies from Kings in Halifax. He embraced the (Russian) Orthodox Church in his late twenties, becoming active in missions and work with those less fortunate than himself. Possessing an artistic bent, Ian drew and carved beautiful icons, which he gave to churches and individuals as the spirit moved him. He was ordained an Orthodox monk and priest a few years before his death. Master of the wry comment, his quirky sense of humour combined with his philosophical outlook on this transitory life, allowed for lively - even heated - discussions with family and friends over issues that were dear to his heart. Ian is survived by: children Juanita (Kensington, PEI), Father Savvatii - formerly Andrew (New York State), Michael (Summerside, PEI) and Lorena (Aylmer, QC); former wife Judy (Summerside, PEI), former partner Nada (Aylmer), sisters Barbara (Dave MacMullin)(Harvey Station) and Beverly (Toronto), step-mother Marian (Quispamsis) step-brothers Michael, David and Bill and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations to breast cancer research, the Orthodox Church, or your charity of choice would be appreciated. Ian is resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424), where a funeral will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2006 at 10 am. Interment will follow in Fernhill Cemetery.
