Obituary of Douglas W. Fleming

The sudden death of Douglas "Doug" Wallace Fleming, of Quispamsis, occurred Friday, June 9, 2006 in Edmonton, Alberta. Doug was born in Saint John, son of the late David and Beryl (Gibson) Fleming. Doug was a "company man", beginning a 44 year career with NB Tel in the mailroom and retiring as a taxation specialist. He was a proud lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He also owned and operated "Hard Time Candy", making barley toys, peppermint drops and humbugs. For the majority of his NB Tel career Doug was an avid bowler, which led to his active participation in Big Brothers' Bowl for Kids fundraiser. His other interests included travel, cards, darts, reading, movies, and his latest passion golf. He was and is the beloved father of Cindy of Saint John, Stan of Edmonton AB, and Greg (Janice) of Saint John. Poppa will be missed by grandchildren, Kristina, Michael, Kristie, Ryan and Melissa. Doug is also survived by his brother Stanley (Carol) Fleming of Fergus, ON, his two sisters: Mary Lou (Robert) Dewar of Calgary, AB and Alice (Charles) Wachter of Millersville, MD; many nieces and nephews; former wife, Micheline Fleming and step-daughter Cindy (Jeff) Marriner of Ottawa ON. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his first wife Elizabeth "Betty Lou" (Mabey), four brothers: Dick, George, Charlie, and Victor, and two sisters: Eleanor and Edith. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (506-634-7424) with visiting on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2006 from Portland United Church at 11:00 am. Interment will take place in Ocean View Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Big Brothers - Big Sisters of Saint John or the Portland United Church Scholarship Fund.
