Obituary of Robert Arthur Squires

The death of Robert "Bob" Arthur Squires of Carleton-Kirk Lodge, formerly of Dominion Court, Saint John West, husband of 65 years to Ruth Lillian (Shiels) Squires, occurred on Friday, June 9, 2006 at his residence. Born in Hull, England on July 18, 1920, he was the son of the late Arthur and Mariam (Latus) Squires. Mr. Squires was a veteran on World War II, serving overseas with the Royal Navy and was a member of the Jervis Bay Legion Branch #53 and the Main Brace Naval Veteran's Association. He joined the Royal Navy in June 1939 in England and was discharged in 1942 and was a survivor of the H.M.S. Jervis Bay, which sank on November 5, 1940 while courageously defending a convoy of 37 ships bound for England. Bob left England in 1944 moving to Saint John where he worked as a first class Stationary Engineer for various companies including Irving Pulp and Paper, Lantic Sugar Refinery and Crosby Molasses for many years before his retirement. Besides his wife, he is survived by several nieces, nephews and friends. At Robert's request there will be no visitation or funeral service. Interment will take place at Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery on Monday, June 12, 2006 at 2:00 PM, with graveside prayers by Rev. Canon Alvin Westgate. Remembrances to the Arthritis Society or the charity of the donors' choice would be appreciated.
