Obituary of George Raid

The death of George Raid of Saint John, NB occurred on Thursday, May 11, 2006 at Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Tallin, Estonia on April 23, 1914 son of the late Sergei and Maria Markovich. He emigrated to Canada and later served in the Merchant Navy as a radio operator during WWII. He worked for Canadian National Steamships as a radio operator but most of his working life was spent as a machinist at the Telegraph Journal/Evening Times Globe. He spent several years as a Security Guard at Canaport. George was an avid learner his entire life. He had an extensive library and music collection, could speak seven languages, was an accomplished photographer, built model airplanes, telescopes and kayaks, and was an expert marksman. His passion for over half his life was as a ham radio operator - call sign VE1AVN - developing many special, long-term friendships. In his long retirement, George enjoyed the senior's walking club and especially the senior's dances at the City Market Senior's Club where he maintained many friendships and was a sought-after dance partner. Survived by three daughters, Carole (Terry) Billson of Manali, India, Brenda (Fred) Barber of Ottawa and Margo Raid of Saint John; three grandchildren, Tony (Susan) Raid, Marshall and Robyn Merkley and three great-grandchildren, Cole, Ryan and Jack. Predeceased by wife, Marion (Nichols) Raid; special friend, Joan Ullock. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506)634-7424 with visiting on Friday from 7-9 pm and Saturday 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Following cremation, a private service will be held at a later time. Remembrances may be made to War Amps (Champs Program) or a charity of the donor's choice.
