Obituary of Robert L. McWhirter

The death of Robert L. McWhirter of 5 Sprucewood Avenue, Rothesay, husband of Phyllis (Field) McWhirter, occurred on Thursday, February 16, 2005 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Apple River, NS on January 17, 1918, he was the son of the late William and Muriel (Dunn) McWhirter. Robert lived most of his adult life in Saint John and was employed with the City Transit and Saint John Transit for 40 years, retiring in 1983 as Manager of Plant and Equipment. He was a member of St. David's United Church and a former member of Tabernacle United Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and served on the Deacon's and Trustee's board. He was also a member of the Masonic Union Lodge of Portland No. 10, F & AM and received his 50 year pin and membership. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and spending their summers in their trailer on the St. John River. He liked to sing and play the accordion with the “Kincade Group” to entertain at the Senior Citizen Homes. Besides his wife, Phyllis, he is survived by one son, Ronald and his wife Cathy, one daughter, Donna Hennessey and her husband Daniel and four grandsons, Will and Jamie McWhirter and Riley and Aaron Hennessey. He was predeceased by one brother, Burton. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held at St. David's United Church, Rothesay on Saturday, February 19, 2006 at 11:00am. Interment in Fernhill Cemetery. Remembrances to the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated.
