Obituary of Thomas L. McGloan

The death of Thomas L. McGloan, Q.C. of Saint John, NB, husband of Marilyn McGloan (nee Cullinan), occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on May 7, 2005. Born October 6, 1931, he was the son of the late Thomas Louis McGloan, Q.C. and Eileen McGloan (nee O'Regan). A devoted citizen, Tom graduated from St. Vincent's High School in 1948, Saint Francis Xavier University in 1952, and the Law School of the University of New Brunswick in 1955. Admitted to the New Brunswick Bar in 1955 and appointed Queen's Counsel in 1973, Mr. McGloan worked right up until the time of his death as a senior partner in the law firm of Gilbert McGloan Gillis, as Chairman of the Board of Directors of G. E. Barbour Inc., and as Honourary Consul of Finland for New Brunswick. He was involved in many community projects, serving on several boards and commissions. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces Naval Reserve 1951-1982, Commanding Officer HMCS Brunswicker 1969-1971, retiring with the naval rank of Captain. For his service to the people of Finland, of whom many had immigrated to this province before the war, he was Knighted into the Order of the White Rose of Finland. Besides his wife Marilyn, he is survived by two sons, John McGloan (Tina) and Mark McGloan; two daughters, Beth McGloan Asimakos (Peter) and Jane Kennedy (Jamie); four grandchildren, Margaret Eden Kennedy, Caroline Jane Asimakos, John Thomas Asimakos, and Thomas Connor McGloan, all of Saint John; three sisters, Sr. Ann Marie McGloan of the Sisters of Charity in Saint John, Mary-Eileen Kenny (Desmond) of Calgary, and Maura Keenan (Gerard) of Fredericton; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424), with visiting on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Church on Thursday, May 12, 2005 at 11:00 a.m., with interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Greater Saint John Community Foundation or to a charity of the donor's choice
