Obituary of Rickie Van Smith

Rick passed away living with cancer on, Thursday, July 7, 2016 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John, NB on March 13, 1954 he was a son of the late Gerald G. Smith Sr. and Gladys H. (East) Smith. Surviving are his beautiful daughter, Chelsey A Smith; sons Corey Van Smith and Cody A. Smith; sister Betty A. Armstrong (Smith), of Dartmouth, NS; Lorrie L. Lefaith of Quispamsis; brothers - his hero, Gerald G. Smith of Courtice, ON; Wayne D. Smith of Waterloo, ON; one sweet heart granddaughter, Asia Marie; close friends George LeBlanc, Jim McLaughlin and Kristine O’Reily. Rick worked in business during his early life, and later enjoyed his occupation as Superintendent Operations, Canada Post Corporation, Saint John NB, retiring due to ill health after 22 years of service. Rick had been in a number of organizations throughout his life, he enjoyed being a Shriner and Mason (director of Luxor Oriental Band) and made many friends over the years from around the world being known as "Dad" to many students. A member of free and accepted Masons Hibernia Lodge, Mother Lodge Union Lodge of Portland, Carleton Union Lodge, a Scottish Rite (32nd) Masons as well as a York’s Templer. He had also been a member of the Black Belt Judocan Canada; past membership of divisional officer of # 286 ambulance division, Defensive Driving Club of Canada director of PASAGE, Trees International and Canada Defensive Driving League. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A Masonic Lodge service will take place at 7:00 pm. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday July 13, 2016 at 12:00 pm from Brenan’s Chapel. For those who wish, remembrances made to Luxor Shriners of NB would be appreciated by the family. Interment will take place at Fernhill Cemetery.
