Obituary of F. Kathleen Callaghan

It is with heavy hearts the family of Kay Callaghan beloved wife of the late David Callaghan announces her death, which occurred on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at Embassy Hall-Shannex, Quispamsis. Born on November 22, 1934 in Saint John, she was the daughter of the late George and Doris (Nickson) Burgess. Kay was a devoted mother and grandmother; she dedicated her time to her family first by endlessly sharing love by caring for their needs. She was an avid supporter of her grandchildren’s hobbies, never absent from a sporting event, recital or school activity. Kay never missed an opportunity to spend time with her family and her many friends. Prior to her retirement, Kay had a long working career with New Brunswick Housing, retiring after 30 years of service. She took great comfort in care-taking and her kindness was extended to everyone she knew and was evident by the countless hours helping others. She was a past member the Thistle-St. Andrews Curling Club and longtime past member of St. Paul’s and Trinity Anglican Churches where she volunteered her talents by baking for any event. In her younger years, Kay enjoyed singing with the Sea Belles and volunteering with Meals on Wheels. She will be sadly missed. Kay is survived by her daughters, Katherine Melanson (Brad) and Allyson Stack (Gerald) all of Quispamsis; brother, Malcolm Burgess (Judith) of Kingston; sister, Frances MacGregor (Donald) of Ontario; grandchildren, Ryan Melanson (Emily), Rebecca Melanson, Joshua Stack and Lauren Stack; sisters-in-law, Barbara Burgess (the late Robert), Eleanor Burgess (the late George), Ann Patriquen (the late Mel), Claire McGuire (Arthur) and Mary Lou Smith (Kevin); several nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be sadly missed by longtime friend Ruby McPhee. In addition to her parents and spouse, Kay was also predeceased by her brothers, Robert and George; as well as her sister, Elizabeth "Betty". Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Thursday, June 2, 2016 from 6:00 - 9:00 PM. The funeral service will be held from Brenan’s Chapel on Friday, June 3, 2016 at 12:00 Noon. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer Society or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
