Obituary of James M. Bowes

The death of James M. 'Jim' Bowes, husband of Elizabeth A. 'Betty' (Little) Bowes, occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Thursday, September 30, 2004. Jim was born in Saint John on March 25, 1934, a son of the late Phillip and Jean (McCullough) Bowes. He had been employed as a papermaker with Irving Paper for 25 years until his retirement in 1991. Prior to working at the paper mill, he had been a firefighter with the City of Saint John for over 8 years. Jim was very involved in volunteering as a Scout Leader for several years, as driver for the Cerebral Palsy bus, and with the Red Cross Seniors Program. Before he took ill Jim had spent 14 years with Hospice of Saint John and was named their first Volunteer of the Year in 2001. Jim loved camping, woodworking, and spending time with his grandchildren, whom he loved so much. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, David (Debbie) of Rothesay; one daughter, Mary Anne Galbraith (Thomas) of Saint John; one brother, Phillip (Barbara) of Kelowna, B.C.; two sisters, Frances Barry (Malcolm) of Rothesay, and Rosalie Isele (Tom) of Old Saybrook, Ct.; five grandchildren, Sarah, Sean, and Ryan Galbraith, and Joshua and Jack Bowes; and several nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law. Resting at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., with visiting on Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Pius X Church on Monday morning at eleven o'clock. Following cremation, interment ill take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of Saint John would be appreciated.
