Obituary of Sister M. Estella Kennedy

The death of Sister M. Estella Kennedy (Sr. Theresa Carmel) of Ruth Ross Residence occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Friday, September 17, 2004. Sister Kennedy was born in McAdam, a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Foley) Kennedy. Sister entered the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, 1930. She received a Certificate and Registration in Laboratory Technology as well as a Registered Nursing Certificate. She received her B.Sc. in Nursing from the University of Ottawa. Sister Kennedy served at the Infants' Home in Saint John. She served at Holy Family Hospital in Laboratory and Paediatrics from 1944 until 1947. In 1947 she returned to St. Joseph's Hospital and nursed in the field of Paediatrics. Sister also taught in the School of Nursing at St. Joseph's Hospital. She served at the Cathedral parish St. Vincent de Paul Society. After retiring from nursing, she did some archival work and historical writing for the Sisters of charity Archives, along with pastoral visiting at St. Joseph's Hospital. She served at St. Joseph's Convent, West Saint John,and St. Vincent's Convent until moving to Ruth Ross Residence in 1986. She was pre-deceased by by three brothers, Rev. T. Gordon Kennedy, M. William Kennedy, and Oscar Kennedy. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Resting at St. Vincent's Convent, 31 Cliff St., with visiting on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Tuesday morning at ten o'clock. Interment will take place in the Sisters of Charity Plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Evening Vigil will be held on Monday evening at seven o'clock.
