Obituary of Dick Murphy

<p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The death of Dick Murphy occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on June 6, 2013.&nbsp; He was born in Saint John on August 7, 1936 and was the son of the late George and Mabel (Maguire) Murphy. Dick is survived by his wife Brenda Murphy (Losier) and their child, Sheena Murphy and children; Michael, Sean and Sharon (Phil) and granddaughter Samantha Calvin. Also survived by his brothers and sisters; Terry Murphy (Anne), Wayne Murphy (Dawn), Frances Kemp (Harold), Lois McAllister (Mort), Loretta Armstrong and Doreen Cyr as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family Art and Kay Losier, Doug Losier and Linda Losier. &nbsp;Dick is also survived by lifelong friend and teammate; Tommy Gillen and his two pets, Hausha and Lucky. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by brother and sisters - Robert Murphy, Marie Flemming and Delores Murphy.</p> <p>Dick was passionate about sports &ndash; all sports - but particularly basketball where he made a name for himself as "Tricky Dickie".&nbsp; Name a sport and he played it and more likely coached it. &nbsp;He has coached senior, junior, juvenile, midget, high school, junior high and minor basketball teams for over 50 years. &nbsp;One of his favorite coaching memories was winning the Canadian Juvenile Basketball Championship in 1959 and 1960.&nbsp; &nbsp;Sports allowed him to give back to the city he loved, and it loved him back and he was inducted into the Saint John Sports Hall of Fame and the Basketball New Brunswick Hall of Fame.&nbsp; Dick was deeply involved in helping children, whether through his work at Dr. Roberts or by volunteering hours coaching and supporting children. &nbsp;Many felt his influence, support and love either as a teammate on the field or on the court or in later years as a coach.</p> <p>He has served on the Board of Directors for the Saint John City and District Basketball Association and started the Police Athletic Basketball Team and was part of 12 Maritime Championship Teams.</p> <p>He worked as a youth instructor at the CYO where he started coaching basketball in 1958.&nbsp; Later he worked at the Dr. Roberts Hospital School for 20 years and then worked with children at the City Police Youth Division.</p> <p>&nbsp;He leaves behind many friends that will deeply miss his mischief, sense of humor, and most of all his kindness.</p> <p>Resting at Fitzpatrick&rsquo;s Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo Street (634-1965) with visiting on Sunday from 12 noon to 5 pm followed by cremation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday June 10, 2013 at 12:10 from the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Interment in St. Joseph&rsquo;s Cemetery.
