Obituary of Helen Barrett

It is with peace that the family of Helen Barrett informs you of her death at St. Joseph’s Hospital on March 24, 2012. Helen Barrett was born in Saint John, N.B. December 26, 1916. She was a daughter of the late Frederick and Sabina (Shaw) Barrett. Helen was a graduate of St. Vincent’s High School and worked at the N.B. Telephone Company (NBTel), finishing as Senior Clerk. She retired after 39 years of service. Helen was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Canadian Irish Cultural Association. In her younger years, she was an avid bowler. Helen lived on St. James St. in the South End for most of her life. She was a life-long member of St. John the Baptist Parish. A quiet, gentle woman, Helen enjoyed time with family and friends, playing cards, buying lottery and scratch tickets, swimming and gardening in Loch Lomond and meeting with her friends uptown. Helen was the family historian, the one who was always invited and attended every important family event. Her presence and quick sense of humor will be greatly missed. Helen was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was pre-deceased by her parents; her brother, Kenneth (infant); her sister, Frances (infant); her brothers and their wives - Louis (Audrey); John (Anne); William (Mary) and her sister, Grace. She was also pre-deceased by two nieces: Elizabeth Brooks and Barbara MacDonald. She is survived by a niece, Sister Sandra Barrett, and nephews, Murray (Bobbie) Barrett, Robert (Joanne) Barrett, John (Nancy) Barrett and Dennis (Ann) Barrett; several grand nieces and nephews. Resting at Fitzpatrick’s Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo Street, Saint John, NB (634-1965) with visiting on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. John the Baptist Church on Tuesday March 27, 2012 at 2:00 PM followed by a reception in the church hall and interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, however donations to the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation or charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
