Obituary of Anita M. McINERNEY

McINERNEY, Anita M.-The death of Anita Marie McInerney, widow of Dr. James P. McInerney, occurred at Sioux City, Iowa, on Thursday, September 15, 2011, after a period of failing health. Anita was born in London, Ont., on February 20, 1920, a daughter of the late William Charles and Blanche Marie (Girardot) Aust. After graduating from high school, she trained as a laboratory technician at St. Joseph's Hospital in London. She moved to Toronto and worked at the Toronto General Hospital, becoming Chief Laboratory Technician there. She married Dr. James McInerney in Toronto on April 14, 1956. They resided in Saint John and Riverside, N.B. Dr. McInerney died in 1991 after a long and distinguished career as a physician and surgeon. Anita was a home maker with many interests. She won the New Brunswick Ladies' Curling Championship and represented New Brunswick with her curling team in 1964. She was a member of St. Andrew's Curling Club. She served as Ladies' President of the Union Club and Riverside Golf and Country Club. She was enthusiastic gardener, and spent many hours in her lovely garden. She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church and was involved in volunteering and support of her parish, particularly Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rothesay. She was a member of St. Michael's Parish in Sioux City. Anita moved to Sioux City in 2009 due to failing health and was a resident in Bickford Memory Care until her death. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Edward G. and William P. Aust; and her infant daughter, Jane Paula. She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Dr. Elizabeth McInerney and her son-in-law, Dr. Mark Johnston of Sioux City; her grandsons, James Johnston of London, England, and David Johnston of Ames, Iowa; her granddaughter, Emily Johnston of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews and their families. Resting at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., with visiting on Wednesday from 7 to 9 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Rothesay, on Thursday, September 22, 2011, at noon hour. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer Society of NB; Our Lady of Perpetual Help Building Fund; or the Dr. James P. and Anita McInerney Fund of the Saint John Foundation.
