Obituary of Sister Agnes S. Butler

The death of Sister Agnes S. Butler (Sr. Mary Alberta) occurred at Ruth Ross Residence on Saturday, February 7, 2004. Sister Butler was born in Saint John, a daughter of the late James and Mary Ellen (Trainor) Butler. She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception on January 6, 1927. Prior to entering the Sisters of Charity, Sister worked as a stenographer and filing clerk after graduating from St. Vincent's Girls High School and Modern Business College. Sister held her Teacher's License, a Bachelor of Arts, and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of New Brunswick. Sister taught at Holy Trinity School and St. Patrick's School in Saint John. After retiring from teaching, Sister Butler resided at Our Lady of Good Hope Convent in Hope, B.C. , where she served on the Parish Council and taught Catechetics. Sister returned to Saint John and resided at St. Vincent's Convent until she moved to Ruth Ross Residence in 1998. She was pre-deceased by five brothers, Father Joseph, Father Albert, Vincent, Leonard, and Walter Butler; and two sisters, Mrs. Helen Holmes and Mrs. Loretta Cormier. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Rose McLaughlin of Saint John; and several nieces and nephews. Resting at St. Vincent's Convent, 31 Cliff St., with visiting on Sunday from 7 to 9 and on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Vincent's Chapel on Tuesday morning at ten o'clock. Interment will take place in the Sisters of Charity Plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Prayer Vigil will be held on Monday evening at seven o'clock.
