Obituary of Joan Alexander

Joan Alexander passed away quietly in her sleep at her home on Monday morning, May 4, 2009. Living life to the full as always Joan had gone swimming at the Aquatic Center on Sunday, had dinner with friends that evening and spoken with several of her children before retiring for the night. Known in her youth as an actress for plays at St. Peter's Auditorium Joan continued acting in amateur productions up to the 1960's in the Fundy Frolics productions at Saint John High School. Her adventurous spirit also showed in her love of travel and she maintained a current passport "because you never know when someone will invite you on a trip". In 1974 as part of a Commonwealth Expedition she travelled by bus from London, England to Bombay, India and back, sometimes sleeping under the stars and sometimes in palaces. Other trips to Europe and the US gave her a rich view of the world. She particularly enjoyed a visit to Italy in 1999 with her daughter Susan and daughter-in-law Diana.Florida, with her friends, and South Carolina, to be with her grandchildren, were other favorite destinations. Ever busy, Joan dropped cross country skiing a few years ago, but remained an active member of Aquatic Center, two bridge clubs and a yoga club and attended the Imperial Theatre and other events whenever the opportunity presented itself. Born to Matthew A. Malone and Anna (Keating) Malone Joan came from a large family. She was predeceased by her brother Gerard Malone and sisters Eileen (Wilson), Mary (Hughes), Dorothy (McManuis), Rita (Driscoll) and Elizabeth (Scanlon). Her remaining brother Thomas Malone (Susan Kelly) is living in Moncton NB. Joan married Francis Alexander, deceased, and had a large family of her own of which she was immensely proud. She is survived by her sons Robert, Paul (Heather), David (Annette Chisholm), Frank and Stephen (Diana) and her daughter Susan (Marc Suter), five grandchildren and two great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Joan will be sadly missed by her extended family and her great many friends and acquaintances. Visitation will be at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home on Wednesday from 7 to 9 pm, and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Peter's Church on Friday morning at 10:00 am. Interment to take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Donations to St. Peter's Church Building Fund would be appreciated by the family.
