Obituary of Gerard S. McCaig

McCAIG- The death of Gerard S. McCaig (age 75), husband of Carmel(Daigle) McCaig, occurred peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Sunday, March 2, 2008 after a lengthy illness. Gerard was a life long member of the Knights of Columbus, being a team Captain for the Degree Team and Past Grand Knight of Council 937. He was Head Usher for St.Ann's Church and a Past-President of Parish Council. Gerard retired from the New Brunswick Department of Transportation after a 32 year career that included with him being District Supervisor/ Driver Examination Services. He was a lifelong member of the United Commercial Travelers. He coached many hockey teams during his lifetime and particularly enjoyed his appointment as president of Simonds Minor Hockey and trainer for the Saint John Schooners which recently celebrated their 40th anniversary. Gerard will be especially missed by his wife of 49 years, Carmel; his son, Michael (Karen) of Saint John; and his precious granddaughter, Victoria. Gerard was predeceased by his eight siblings Bill, John, James, Danny, Gregory, Helen Lenihan, Jean, and Verna McCutcheon. Resting at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., with visiting on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ann's Church on Wednesday morning at eleven o'clock. Reception to follow in St. Ann's Parish Hall. Following cremation interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Reception to follow at St.Ann's Church Hall. In Lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Society, the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. Members of the Knights of Columbus will gather at the funeral home on Tuesday evening at seven o'clock.
