Obituary of Eileen Kathryn McCurdy

McCURDY-Mrs. Eileen Kathryn (Whalen) McCurdy, widow of J. S. "Bud" McCurdy, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 19, 2007, at Rocmaura Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. Born in Dorchester, N.B., she was the daughter of the late Richard and Kathryn (Shea) Whalen. Following graduation from St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing, she did post-graduate studies in obstetrics at the Boston Lying-In Hospital (Women and Brigham Hospital). When World War II began she returned to Canada and was commissioned as a Lieutenant Nursing Sister in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corp, where she met and subsequently married Bud. She nursed throughout her life and retired as Evening Supervisor at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was a member of St. Peter's Parish. Eileen loved and was loved by all her family and will be sadly missed. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was predeceased by brothers Paul and Lee Whalen; and sisters, Dorothy Anderson, Marjorie Wilson, and Eleanor King. She is survived by two daughters, Eleanor Kelly (John) of Saint John, and Ruth Silver (David) of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren, Christian Kelly (Renee) of Winnipeg, Nicholas Kelly (Sarah) of Winnipeg, Matthew Mercer (Kindry) of Nanoose, B.C., Joanna Mercer of Victoria, B.C., Alexander Mercer of Mount Allison, Sackville, N.B.; as well as several nieces and nephews, including Mary Lee Johnston (Ron), and Ann Green (Bobby). Her family wish to thank the staff and volunteers of Rocmaura Nursing Home (Trinity and Terrace Courts) for the compassionate care she received. Resting at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., with visiting on Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Church on Monday morning at eleven o'clock. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to Rocmaura Foundation, the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick, or Romero House.
