Obituary of John Francis Gillis

GILLIS-the death of John 'Jack' Francis Gillis occurred at his residence on March 9, 2006. Born in Saint John on April 3, 1930, he was the son of the late Frank and Lucy (Kiervin) Gillis. Jack graduated from St. Vincent's Boy's High School in 1949. He then worked as a radio announcer for 5 years at CKBC Bathurst, CFNB Fredericton, and CHNS Halifax. Jack attended St. Mary's University and completed his BA from St. Thomas University in 1966. He obtained his BEd. from the University of New Brunswick in 1969. He also acquired Certificates IV and V as well as Principal Certificate Diploma from UNB. Jack started teaching in Bathurst before returning to Saint John where he spent the remainder of his teaching career in District 8. He taught at several schools in the district including Welsford School where he was principal for two years. The majority of his career was spent at Barnhill Memorial School. While at Barnhill he taught several subjects and was also Guidance Counselor for the westside schools. Jack was registered as an honor member of the 'International Registry of Who's Who', 1968 edition, Washington, D.C. (Toronto, Ontario Branch). Jack is survived by his brother, Richard, his nephew, Dr. Stephen Gillis, and his two nieces, Dr. Ann Gillis (Dr. Chuck Abbate) and Maureen Gillis, all of Saint John. At the family's request, visitation for family members only. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter's Church on Monday, March 13, 2006 at ten A.M. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Animal Rescue League or the donor's choice.
