Obituary of Sister Frances L. Rooney

ROONEY- the death of Sister Frances L. Rooney (Sr. Jane Frances) of Ruth Ross Residence occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Wednesday, February 22, 2006. Sister was born in Estevan, Sask., a daughter of the late Francis A. and Anne Jane (Reidy) Rooney. Before entering the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception Sister Frances worked as a Registered Nurse in the operating room of Holy Family Hospital, Prince Albert, Sask. Sister entered the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1939. She worked as Head Nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital, Saint John, before moving to Vancouver and working at St. Vincent's Hospital as Director of Nursing Services-Nursing Supervisor for the next eighteen years (1942-1960). Sister received her Bachelor of Nursing Degree from the University of Ottawa in 1963. Sister Rooney worked as the Director of Nursing at Holy Family Hospital. She served as Administrator at Holy Family Hospital after which time she became the Director of Patient Services. Sister Frances served on the General Council of the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception from 1975-1980. She served as Pastoral Worker at Holy Family Hospital and later resided at St. Vincent's Hospital Convent in Vancouver and served in Mission Education and later in Pastoral and Spiritual Care until 1998. Sister moved to Holy Name Convent, Vancouver, in 1998, where she resided until she returned to Saint John in 2005 and resided at Ruth Ross Residence. Sister was pre-deceased by two brothers, Daniel and Thomas Rooney; and two sisters, Rose Anne Doris Rooney (infant) and Mrs. Ione Lambert. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Poudrier of Prince Albert, and Mrs. Beth (Ed) Minvielle of Victoria; and several nieces and nephews. Resting at St. Vincent's Convent, 31 Cliff St., with visiting on Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Vincent's Chapel on Monday morning at ten o'clock. Interment will take place in the Sisters of Charity Plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Evening Vigil will be held on Sunday evening at seven o'clock.
