Obituary of Patrick James Mooney

MOONEY-the death of Patrick James Mooney of 20 Queen Square occurred on Wednesday, September 28, 2005, at the Saint John Regional Hospital from complications of AML (Acute Myelogenous Leukemia). He was born in Saint John on November 29, 1939, a son of the late John Patrick Mooney (a local contractor) and the late Evelyn (Lawlor) Mooney. Patrick grew up in the South End where he attended St. John the Baptist School, and graduated from St. Malachy's Memorial High School in 1957. Patrick graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with B.Sc. and B. Ed. degrees and spent two memorable years as a Teaching Fellow in the Mathematics Dept. of the University of Detroit (University of Detroit Mercy), graduating with an M.A. degree. Patrick attended Dalhousie University , the University of Maine, and Wayne State University pursuing his interest in Mathematics. Pat taught in local schools, including St. John the Baptist, St. Malachy's, and Millidgeville North. He moved to Chicago where he studied computer programming and system design, and was employed by Honeywell Information Systems Inc. where he worked for many years as a Systems Analyst. He was an all round sportsfan, cultivated during his formative years, with a special interest in hockey, baseball, and Basketball (his favorite team sport). Pat was an avid runner during his youth and ran races of various distances including the Chicago Marathon of 1980. Upon his retirement in 1993 he returned to Saint John where he enjoyed the company of family and friends. He was predeceased by his brother, John Patrick Mooney; his sister, Geraldine Mooney; and brothers-in-law Ralph Marr and Dr. Joseph A. MacDougall. He is survived by his sisters, Kathleen MacDougall of Saint John, Constance Marr of Rothesay, Barbara (Raymond) Moore of Ottawa, Evelyn (Denis) Morris of Halifax, and Gertrude Mooney of Saint John; 12 nephews; 15 nieces; 45 grandnephews; 29 grandnieces; 6 great-grandnephews; and 4 great-grandnieces. Resting at Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home, 100 Waterloo St., with visiting on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Church on Saturday morning at 10:30. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
