Obituary of Sister Jean H. Burns

The death of Sister Jean H. Burns (Sr. Angela Marie) of Ruth Ross Residence occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Wednesday, January 5, 2005. Sister was born in Saint John, a daughter of the late Thomas and Agnes (McGill) Burns. Sister entered the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception on November 1, 1932. She earned a Masters of Science in Education in 1956. Sister Jean taught at various schools in Saint John throughout her forty-five years of teaching, These included St. Joseph's, St. Peter's, and St. Patrick's elementary schools and St. Vincent's Girls High School, where she was Principal from 1960 until her retirement in 1979. Sister was actively engaged with the Atlantic Association of Spiritual Directors. She was pre-deceased by six brothers, Harry, Walter, William, Father Arthur, Thomas, and George Burns; and four sisters, Mrs. Kathleen Coll, Mrs. Edith McGuinness, Mrs. Margaret O'Brien, and Mrs. Frances Nickerson. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Sister Margaret Rose Nickerson of the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception. Resting at St. Vincent's Convent, 31 Cliff St., with visiting on Thursday from 7 to 9 and on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Saturday morning at 10:30. Interment will take place in the Sisters of Charity Plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Prayer Vigil will be held on Friday evening at seven o'clock.
