Obituary of Hazel Hughena Blackwell
Hazel Hughena Blackwell passed from this life in Our Lord Jesus Christ on July 5, 2007 in the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Vankleek Hill, Ontario, she was the daughter of the late Emery and Christena (Cameron) Valley. She is survived by her loving husband, Gordon, who she was married to for 52 years, her brother Hugh (Marjorie) of Smith Falls, Ontario, and a niece Heather and nephew William of British Columbia. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her brothers Warrant Officer William Valley, killed during World War II, and Cameron Valley (May) and a loving grandmother and aunt. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan's Bay View Select Community Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road (634-7425), with a graveside and interment service that will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery on Saturday, July 7, 2007 at 11:00 am. Memorial donations to St. Columba Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice would be appreciated. Prior to her marriage, Hazel taught kindergarten and grade one classes in Eastern Ontario. When she moved to the Maritimes, she continued to teach in the church school and led a weekly children's group in St. Columba in the newly formed city of Lancaster and later when the new church was built in 1969. As in her life she always emphasized in her teaching the first statement of the children's memory course for beginners, "God is Love." Hazel's life of faith and trust in the Lord, as she worked alongside her husband ministering for 43 years to the people of St. Columba Congregation, shone through to all. She will be greatly missed by her husband, her relatives and friends. Our thanks are expressed to God as He worked through the kindness of the nurses and doctors in the Saint John Regional Hospital during Hazel's illness.
