Obituary of William Weston McCully

William Weston McCully of Saint John, NB, husband of Margaret (McVea), his wife of 25 years, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at Ridgewood Veteran's Wing, which had been his home for the past eight years. Born November 10, 1922 in Petitcodiac, NB, he was a son of the late George Irvine and Maude Anne (Weston) McCully. He graduated from Petitcodiac High School and began his career at sea in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. He joined Canadian National Steamships in 1947 and served on the Canadian Constructor, Canadian Challenger, Canadian Victor and the Canadian Cruiser. These cargo-passenger liners operated between Canada, the United States and the Caribbean. He also served on the William Carson, mainstay of the Cabot Strait ferry service operated by Canadian National between Newfoundland and the mainland. Wes was second engineer aboard the MV Bluenose when she was introduced to the Bay of Fundy service and later went on to become Chief Engineer. Prior to retirement in 1983 he was Marine Superintendent Engineer with C.N. Marine. Wes was a member of the Institute of Marine Engineers (U.K.), Canadian Institute of Marine Engineering and the Canadian Merchant Navy Association. He was a Past Master and Life Member of Hiram Lodge No. 12 A.F. & A.M., Yarmouth, NS, life member of Albert Edward Lodge of Perfection and Gordon L. Bennett Chapter of Rose Croix, Summerside, PEI, a member of Nova Scotia Sovereign Consistory, Halifax, NS, Luxor Shriners A.A.O.N.M.S. of New Brunswick and Philip A. Jerguson Chapter No. 18 Order of the Eastern Star. He is survived by daughters Susan Rudderham (Byron) Hunts Point, NS; Catherine Inness (David) Bridgewater, NS; step-daughter Johanne McVea (Charles Patterson) Dartmouth, NS; step-son Paul McVea (Theresa) Quispamsis, NB; grandchildren Jeff Rudderham (Amanda), Jason Rudderham, Cathy Inness, Robbie Inness (Andrea), step-grandchildren Kyle and Kelsey McVea, Alex and Jennifer Patterson, great- grandchildren Nathan and Paige Rudderham and Nate Inness, brothers Francis, Toronto, ON, and Stuart, Edmonton, AB; several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife Eleanor (MacNeil). Resting at Brenan's Bay View Select Community Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John, NB, (506-634-7425) with visiting on Thursday, April 7, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 8, 2005 from Brenan's Bay View Chapel at 2:00 pm. Wes loved the sea and his wishes are to have his ashes scattered at sea, which will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to the NB Heart and Stroke Foundation, Ridgewood Veterans Wing Comfort Fund, Trinity Anglican Church Renovation Fund or a charity of the donor's choice.
