Obituary of Helen K. Burke

The death of Helen Burke, wife of Gerry Burke occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Monday, June 18, 2012. She was born on April 14, 1922 in Saint John to the late Thomas and Kathryne (Boone) Godwin. Helen worked as a secretary for the Corps of Commissionaires and for Dennis Morris School for many years before her retirement. She also taught a reading program at Barnhill School. Helen was a Captain in the 4th Saint John Girl Guilds; Captain of the Sea Ranger Patrol and Ranger Advisor for the Province of NB. She was a member of the war time Militia; attended courses in many provinces achieving "Distinguished" on her "Special to Corps". Helen taught first Aid for many years to army personal, girl guides and scouts. She was a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd and taught Sunday school. Besides her loving husband, Gerry, she is survived by a daughter, Nancy Dykeman (Peter); granddaughters: Sheri London (Jose) and Christy London (Rob); great-grandchildren: Cody, Kyla, Bianca and Taylor; sister-in-law, Frieda Roberts and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and sisters: Lillian, Georgie, Loretta, Doris and Mildred. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visitation on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held from Brenan’s Chapel on Friday, June 22, 2012 at 10:00 am. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
