Obituary of Donald O. Horne

The unexpected death of Don Horne, husband of the late Gladys (Bovard) Horne, occurred at the Moncton Hospital on Monday, July 23, 2012. He was born on March 10, 1938 in Moncton, NB to the late Bert and Louise (Kendrick) Horne. Don graduated from Moncton High in 1955 and studied engineering at UNB. Short but enjoyable stints at the University of Guelph and in civic planning at the City of Moncton preceded 33 years at NBTel, where he worked until his retirement. A tremendous sense of civic engagement led to service as a school trustee and town councillor prior to Don’s term as Mayor of Rothesay from 1983 to 1995. Don was also an active Progressive Conservative. An avid curler and car rallyist in his younger days, Don found his true sports calling as a hockey coach in Kennebecasis. Don loved to share his passion for gardening and photography. Don is survived by three children: Gregg Horne of Toronto, ON, Krista Jones (Bartlee) of Rich Valley, VA and Derrick Horne (Jessica) of Vancouver, BC; four grandchildren: Sidney Hauber, Dylan and Delaney Jones, and Deanica Galo; and his companion, Ronnie Cousins. Public visitation for Don will take place at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) on Friday, July 27 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held from St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Rothesay on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. For those who wish, and in lieu of flowers, remembrances to a charity of donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
