Obituary of William Joseph McLaughlin

It is with heavy hearts the family of William Joseph "Bill" McLaughlin of Chapel Grove/Summerville, husband of Nancy (Gallant) McLaughlin announces his passing, which occurred on Sunday, June 23, 2013 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. A much loved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend, Bill was born in Saint John on February 28, 1933, the son of the late Harry and Mary (Sharkey) McLaughlin. Bill worked for many years with Metropolitan Life, and then as an Agent for Air Canada, and traveled to many places with his wife and family, spending winters in Florida where he and Nancy met many great friends from all over the continent. Always a gentleman and the ultimate host, Bill was generous with his time, talents, and everything he owned. Very community minded, he spent many hours as a volunteer at the Saint John Regional Hospital, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the Board of Trinity Terrace. He grew up in the shadows of St. Peter’s Church, and after moving to Chapel Grove in the 1970’s, became active with St. Bridget’s Mission Church, where he served on Parish Council. He was a member of the Kingston Peninsula Branch 62 of the Royal Canadian Legion, and when he was able enjoyed golfing and fishing, and was an avid "collector". In addition to Nancy, the love of his life for more than 56 years, Bill’s family includes his children, Cathy Howlett (the late Chris) of Clifton Royal, Tara Worden of Summerville, Christopher McLaughlin (Wendy) of Shortt’s Lake, NS, Patricia McLaughlin of Summerville, and Peter McLaughlin of Rothesay; ten grandchildren, Nathan, Aaron (Julie), Kendra (Joe), Brianne (Chapin), Jaclyn, Lauren, Natalie, Codi, Jenna, and Keith; great grandchildren Sam and Cade; siblings Carol Anne Foley (the late Frank) of Saint John, and Harry McLaughlin who died in childhood; his extended family and many life long friends and friends he continued to make.
