Obituary of Harold J. Henneberry

The death of Harold Joseph Henneberry occurred at Ridgewood Veterans Wing on June 10, 2015 at the age of ninety-five. Harold was born in Saint John, NB on June 16, 1919, the only son of eight children born to the late Joseph Patrick Henneberry (+1972) and Ida May McIntyre (+1965). After graduating from St. Vincent's Boys High School in 1936, he completed a business program at Saint John Vocational School. He then worked several years for the Canadian Bank of Commerce. On September 9, 1940 he enrolled in the Canadian Army where he served in Canada, England, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. In February 1945, he was awarded the British Empire Medal, which he received at the hands of King George VI in Buckingham Palace in October 1945. After bringing home a draft of soldiers, he was discharged from the Army on March 7, 1946. He soon began working as a Court Reporter, retiring as Chief Court Reporter for the Province of New Brunswick in 1979. Immediately after retirement, he began Henneberry Reporting Service where he worked more than twenty-five years alongside his daughter, Suzanne, and his late son, John. In 1995 Harold was honoured by the Saint John Law Society by being named its only honorary member. Besides his work, Harold also loved languages, reading, music and travel. For more than fifty years he devoted himself to the study of French, German, Spanish and Japanese. He also served as an organist and choir director in St. Pius X, St. John the Baptist, Stella Maris and St. Ann's parishes for more than thirty years. In 2014 he was named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur along with a number of other surviving veterans in commemoration of the seventieth anniversary of the liberation of France. Harold is survived by his sons Peter Joseph and his wife Faith (Baldwin), Msgr. Brian Harold, Mark David and his wife Jacqueline (Shanks), and his daughter Suzanne Marita and her husband Bret Ross. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law Beverly MacDonald and her husband Neil as well as by his grandchildren, Matthew Joseph Henneberry and his wife Sarah (McRae) and their son Grant Parker Henneberry, Jillian Elizabeth Roy and her husband Chris and Jennifer Rita Joan Ross. As well he is survived by his brother-in-law Harry McInerney and his wife Liz along with numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Harold was predeceased by his wife Rita Elsie (McInerney) (+2000), his son John Owen (+2003), and his sisters Louise Norcott (+2008), Bernice McCormack (+1997), Dorothy Henneberry (+1981), Eleanor Edwards (+2004), Geraldine Scott (+2015) as well as Madeline (+1917) and Audrey (+1919) who died as children along with many brothers and sisters in law. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 12, 2015 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Brenan's Funeral Home (634-7424), 111 Paradise Row, Saint John. Funeral Mass will be celebrated by his son Msgr. Brian at St. Pius X Church, 316 Somerset Street on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 12:00 pm. Interment will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery, at a later date. We wish to offer our most heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff of Ridgewood Veterans Wing, both Victory and Liberty, for the love and care you have shown our father over the past four years.
