Obituary of Melvin L. Mawhinney

Surrounded by his loving family, Melvin Mawhinney went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 28, 2015. Born in Saint John on August 5, 1944, Mel was the son of the late Ellis and Lena Mawhinney. Mel pursued a career in accounting and achieved his CGA certification and worked for various companies over his 48 year career. Although he took great pride in his work, his family always came first. He loved antique cars and was a member of the Southwest Antique Car Association. Over his lifetime, he has been involved in various capacities in the St. George Baptist and Hillcrest Baptist Churches. His most recent enjoyment came from being a seasonal camper at Pine Cone Campground. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Linda (Christie) Mawhinney; daughter, Sonya Legere (Jeff); one granddaughter Laura who affectionately named him "P". She undoubtedly was the joy of his life. Also survived by his sister Vivien Carson (Ken); brother in law Ron Christie (Mary); two nephews Aaron and Andrew Carson and a niece Sarah McNally. In addition to his parents, Mel was predeceased by a nephew Ben Christie. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424) with visiting on Saturday, January 31, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm and Sunday, February 1, 2015 at Hillcrest Baptist Church, from 1-1:45. A celebration of Mel’s life will be held on Sunday, February 1, 2015 at 2:00 pm from Hillcrest Baptist Church, 476 Lancaster Avenue, Saint John. Interment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances made to Hillcrest Baptist Church, Saint John Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit, Canadian Cancer Society or any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
