Obituary of Melbourne Joseph Small

**Please note service location and time change. Mel passed away after a courageous fight with cancer on May 29, 2015, at the age of 64. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Jan (Freeze); two sons, Steven (Jolene) and Brian; father, Stanford; aunt, Janice (Willie McMonigle); sisters, Carolyn (Murray Olive), Alana (Lance Crawford) and Margaret Small; in-laws, Carol Wilson, Jim (Anne), David (Rita), Barry (Gail), Derrick (Jane), Susan (Glen Smith), Grant (Janice) and Jeff (Joanne); as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many cousins. Mel will also be sadly missed by his precious grandchildren, Cody, Joshua and Cameron who were the greatest joy of his life. He was predeceased by his mother, Marie Small and brother, Burton. Mel graduated from St. Malachy’s High School and was a loyal member of the air cadets where he got his private pilots and gliders license. He was devoted to making someone’s life better and helped with this by donating 397 units of platelets as well as donating plasma. Mel started his electrical apprenticeship at Saint John Shipbuilding from 1972 – 1974 he then continued his career at Bricklin Canada from 1974 – 1975. In 1976, he started working with Bell Aliant from where he retired in 2009. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Sunday, May 31, 2015 from 2:00 – 8:00 PM. The funeral liturgy will be held from St. Joachim's Church, 603 Loch Lomond Road on Monday, June 1, 2015, at 10:30 AM. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the IWK, the Oncology Unit c/o SJRH Foundation or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
