Obituary of Ruth Mary Heward

Ruth Mary Heward, formerly of Rothesay, died in her sleep in the presence of her son Alan Heward, and trusted family friend and caregiver, Timothy Arthurs, shortly before 7:30am, January 21st. Born in North Bay, Ontario, on February 7th, 1914, Ruth was the daughter of the late Archdeacon C.W. Balfour and Katharine (Thornloe) Balfour. Predeceased by husband Richard (2005) and son Eric (1976). Ruth attended Bishop Strachan School in Toronto and worked in an aircraft factory during WWII. In addition to son Alan, she is survived by sister Peggy Balfour (Kitchener), Goddaughter Katherine Hunt (Oregon), several nieces and nephews. Despite life’s hardships, Ruth’s faith in God never wavered. Loving mother and homemaker whose gentle, kind ways were an inspiration to family, friends, and all those who had the pleasure of her company. The infirmities of advancing years never dampened her passion for life. Ruth managed to exude a genuine sense of contentment even this past year, although very frail. Ruth will indeed be missed and fondly remembered. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Friday, January 31st, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. The funeral service will be held from Brenan's Chapel on Saturday, February 1st, 2014, at 2:00 PM. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery, at a later date.
