Obituary of Barney E. McKay

McKay, Barney E., born on June 7, 1936, has quietly passed in his sleep after 11 long years with Lewy Body Dementia at 12:50am on October 12th, 2014. Uncle Bunk to many of his nieces and nephews, Barney was born and raised in Hayesville and worked in Fredericton for General Dairies and then to Saint John where he worked for 7-UP Sussex until 1968 when he joined the Saint John City Police Force. He retired as a detective with the police force after 32 years of service. His family and friends are going to miss his loving sense of humor, and his utter devotion to them. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, playing cards, bingo, hunting, square dancing and fishing. He was a member of The Knights of Columbus and loved and was loved by the students in his wife’s many classes. Barney is survived by his loving wife, Harriet, of 52 years, his daughters Pam (Rodger) Burton and Janet (Steve) Kilbride, sons, Michael (Karl Annand) and Andrew (Tracy), his two granddaughters, Bianca and Kristen, his great grandson, Odin Van Kleef, his sister Izella (Laurie) Hunter, brothers, Rex (Nellie) and Valentine (Val) (Hazel), his brothers-in-law Ken Laviolette, Waldo (Buddy) Ross, Harvey (Junior) Munn, Bill (Joan) Calder, his sisters-in-law Yvonne, Roberta (Jack) McCrossin, Joyce (Richard Buchanan) Doucette, and many nieces and nephews. Barney was predeceased by his father Neilo and mother Mildred (Munn), his sisters Nina Ross, Harriet (Hattie) and her husband Danny Roach, Audrey Laviolette, Glenna Munn, his brother George, and several nieces. The family would like to thank Dr. Pamela Jarrett for her loving care and support of Barney and family over the last 11 years and the GEM unit at Saint Joseph’s Hospital for their exceptional care. Also, thank you Sharon Brewer for your love and care of Barney in our home. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424), with visitation on Saturday, October 18 and Sunday, October 19, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held at St. Matthew’s Church, Dollard Drive (off Westfield Road), on Monday October 20 at 11 am with a reception to follow. Remembrances to St. Matthew’s Church, St. Joseph’s Hospital- GEM Unit, or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
