Obituary of John Douglas Chase

The death of John “Douglas” Chase of Saint John, NB, husband of Connie (Nelson) Chase, occurred on Thursday, March 29, 2007 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, surrounded by his family and friends. He was born in Saint John, NB on May 21, 1928, a son of the late Herman and Hannah (Baker) Chase. Surviving besides his wife, Connie, are two sons, Brian (Lynn) of Quispamsis and Paul (Charline) of Saint John; brothers-in-law, Kenny (Joan) Nelson, Bert (Sandra) Nelson, and Carl (Kathy) Nelson; sisters-in-law, Donna Logan and Rene Smythe; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Phyllis Ross and Margaret Smith; and brothers-in-law, Bud Logan, Donnie Smythe, Bobby Nelson, Doug Smith, and Cyril Ross. As a successful local businessman, Doug started his career with Manchester Robertson Allison. He was owner/operator of Quality Carpets from 1977 to 2000, retiring at the age of 70. Doug enjoyed basketball, baseball, curling and golf and was involved with coaching in minor hockey. He was a member of Saint Luke’s Anglican Church and was given the honour of lifetime warden. He was a tireless volunteer to several local organizations but his true love was working with the mentally challenged. Doug was involved with the United Commercial Travellers, Jack Kidd Council #755 from 1964 to 2006. Resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424). Visiting hours are Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held from St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Main Street, Saint John, NB on Monday, April 2, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. Memorials to the NB Heart and Stroke Foundation, Palliative Care Unit of Saint John Regional Hospital or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
